Beirut International Airport at Khalde (مطار بيروت الدولي - خلدة) officially opened in April 1950, quickly replacing the older Bir Hassan airfield to serve as Lebanon’s primary gateway to the world. To accommodate the booming post-war era of civil aviation, construction began on a state-of-the-art passenger terminal and modern control tower complex. The formal inauguration of the completed air terminal (Aérogare) on April 23, 1954, solidified Beirut's position as the premier aviation, transit, and commercial crossroad connecting Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
To mark the official inauguration of the terminal building (ذكرى افتتاح محطة مطار بيروت الدولي - ۲۳ نيسان ۱۹٥٤), the Republic of Lebanon (لبنان) issued a dedicated commemorative airmail stamp series on April 23, 1954. Designed by Paul Koroleff and printed in Beirut by Imprimerie Catholique (I.C. Beyrouth), the 10 piastre stamp showcases the sleek modernist architectural terminal and control tower alongside a commercial airliner, celebrating Lebanon's emergence as a global aviation hub.
