Greater Lebanon - Pasteur - bilingual overprint - 50 C
This stamp features the portrait of Louis Pasteur, the French biologist and chemist, originally issued by France to commemorate his scientific legacy. By applying the "GRAND LIBAN" overprint, the French Mandate administration sought to project the prestige of French intellectual and medical achievements onto the Lebanese territory. Historically, this theme highlighted the development of public health and educational institutions in Lebanon under the Mandate, such as the established medical schools in Beirut. The use of Pasteur’s image carries a message of progress through science and hygiene, positioning Lebanon as a regional center for medical excellence and French cultural influence during a period of significant social modernization and institutional building.
