The Litani River Project - 25 piastre
The Litani River Project (مشروع الليطاني) represents one of the largest and most significant civil engineering and water management initiatives in post-independence Lebanon. Originating in the Beqaa Valley and flowing into the Mediterranean Sea north of Tyre, the Litani is Lebanon's longest and most vital river. Established by the national government in the mid-1950s, the Litani River Authority (المصلحة الوطنية لليطاني) constructed a network of dams, hydroelectric power stations, and elevated irrigation aqueducts/canals (Litani - Canal d'Irrigation / الليطاني - قناة الري) to generate electricity and transform fertile agricultural land across the Beqaa Valley and Southern Lebanon.
To feature this major symbol of industrial development, national infrastructure, and economic modernization, the Republic of Lebanon (الجمهورية اللبنانية) issued this 50 piastre airmail stamp (البريد الجوي) as part of its long-serving pictorial definitive series. Designed by V. Pliiss and printed locally in Beirut by Imp. J. Saikali, the stamp highlights an elevated irrigation aqueduct crossing the countryside, celebrating Lebanon's engineering achievements and agricultural progress during the mid-20th century.
