Greater Lebanon – bilingual overprint -The Sower 1.5 PIASTRE
This stamp marks the transitional period of the French Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon, specifically representing the administrative birth of "Grand Liban" (Greater Lebanon). The base illustration is the French "Mouchon" design, which features the winged figure of Liberty holding a tablet of laws and a balance scale, symbolizing the ideals of justice and republican governance.To adapt these French metropolitan stamps for regional use, a bold black "GRAND LIBAN" overprint was applied, signaling the creation of a distinct territorial entity with its own borders and nascent institutions. This historical artifact highlights Lebanon's move toward modern statehood under French influence, using the universal symbolism of the Enlightenment to project an image of legal order and secular progress during the early 1920s.
